Tips + Tricks

Working with a small business can be a really fun thing to do. That being said there are a lot of things you need to consider before reaching out to small businesses.

1.) Why are you reaching out to small businesses?

a.) Do you want to help other small businesses get a good start?

b.) If you are trying to make a lot of money think again!

c.) Are you trying to build your portfolio? Then you are probably in the right place.

2.) What do you want out of the interaction?

a.) Connections?

b.) Experience?

c.) Products?

3.) Are you going to be adding to the business?

a.) Yes! I have ideas that I want to shoot already in mind. (You are in the right place.)

b.) Probably not. ( Don't ask a small business. They will need someone who has some creative ideas.)

Now that you have some ideas on what you need to think about before asking a small business to work together. Now let's talk about what happens when you get a small business to agree on working with you.

1.) You needed to talk to them about the ideas that you have for their product.

2.) You need to ask them what they need the content for.

a.) Once they tell you. Look at the media source that they are asking for help with and see how you are going to make it better.

3.) You needed to have a conversation on money.

a.) You should never work with a company that is going to make you pay for the product.

b.) If you are the one who asked to work with the small business do not ask for payment.

c.) If the small business reaches out to you then you should ask for payment or at least coverage for the material that you are going to be using for their images.
